Why a camp specifically for kids diagnosed with bipolar disorder?

Children and adolescents with bipolar disorder often feel extremely isolated and alone. We wanted to make it possible for these deserving kids to meet one another, believing doing so would be a vital and healing experience.  Furthermore, because of the Adorable Camperunique needs of children and adolescents with pediatric bipolar disorder, many are not able to attend a “typical” summer camp program. We did not want these kids to miss the opportunity to experience the joy of summer camp.

Thus, the YBFNC and its affiliates, Stanford University’s Pediatric Bipolar Disorders Program (http://pediatricbipolar.stanford.edu) and the Taylor Family Foundation (www.ttff.org), joined together to organize and develop a camp to meet the special and unique needs of the bipolar child and adolescent.  Our camp debuted in 2005. The result, an unforgettable and life affirming, overnight camp experience for these cherished kids.

What is the mission of Camp Opehay?

To provide a safe, supportive and fun camp program for children and adolescents diagnosed with bipolar disorder.  At camp they will develop friendships and build community with peers who have similar challenges and unique spirits.  In additon, they will gain a greater sense of  hope, worth and belonging, increase knowledge of their illness, and develop techniques to better care for themselves.

Teamwork
When is Camp?

Camp Opehay will take place August 9-11th, 2008 at the Taylor Family Foundation’s Camp Arroyo in Livermore, California.

How many campers can attend?

The program will serve up to 56 campers ages 9-17 who have a diagnosis of bipolar disorder.

What is the criteria the camper must meet to be considered for the program?

Camp Opehay is not designed as a therapeutic treatment program, nor is it geared toward accommodating or caring for an unstable camper.  Therefore, it is critical to the success of Camp Opehay that each camper meets our criteria.  Please review our extensive camper criteria (click to view) prior to submitting a camper recommendation.  It is also important to know that Camp Opehay is not a day program.  As a result, we can only accommodate campers who can stay overnight for the duration of the program.

How can I recommend a camper?

Submit a recommendation form* to Camp Opehay via email at: camp.opehay.rocks@gmail.com.  If you are unable to submit the form by email, please send to: YBFNC, PO Box 2009, Walnut Creek, CA 94595.  Space is limited. We encourage camper Staff with Camper Swimmingrecommendations to be submitted as early as possible for consideration.
